25. Le fabuleux jardin d’Amélie Poulain
Every day at 10.07 a.m. on the dot, the first visitor is immersed in the world of Jean-Pierre Jeunet and his film Amelie. They don’t yet realise they are getting ready to pass through six scenes of a life, Amélie’s life; six bursts of happiness arranged like reels of sepia-coloured memories.
Amélie’s Youth (‘La Jeunesse d’Amélie’) is a fruity world where fantasy and imagination serve as a refuge. The veritable main character of the film, a garden gnome prepares to embark on a voyage.
Amélie’s Little Pleasures (‘Les Petits Plaisirs d’Amélie’) come from everyday reality: a sweet aroma of crème brûlée, of vanilla, a hand lightly touching grains, a spirit of adventure, an urge to skip stones on the Canal Saint Martin.
The path snakes its way through a box of treasures, where each plant seems to harbour a secret, an emotion too swiftly cast aside, before reaching the Café des Deux Moulins. The aroma of coffee, a hushed atmosphere and chairs arranged to encourage intimacy are all reminiscent of the film. Meanwhile, the gnome’s journey has started in Moscow.
The Local Grocery Store (‘L’Épicerie d’En bas’) then appears under a red umbrella with white polka dots. Crates of tomatoes, lemons, bananas and herbs fill a bright, colourful stall, where even the artichokes have a heart. The tireless globetrotter that is the gnome reappears, this time in New York.
A curtain half reveals The Photo Booth (‘Le Photomaton’), a central element of the film. Sepia flowers, hanging botanical illustrations and spontaneously captured moments tell a story otherwise left unspoken: Amélie’s obsession. The gnome arrives at Angkor…
The last scene is The Burst of Happiness (‘L’Élan du Bonheur’). Amélie is transformed by love. A gentle breeze accompanies visitors to a red door, as if the gardening were whispering to those who have passed through it: ‘Go on, dammit, dare to be happy!’

“Née en Touraine, j’ai grandi au contact des parcs et jardins des châteaux de la Loire. Cet environnement a nourri très tôt mon intérêt pour les végétaux et, plus largement, pour l’aménagement paysager. Après l’obtention d’un BTSA Aménagements paysagers au lycée agricole le Fresne, à Angers, j’ai poursuivi ma formation en Suisse, où j’ai obtenu un Bachelor of Science en architecture du paysage à l’HEPIA (Haute École du paysage, d’ingénierie et d’architecture) de Genève. Diplômée ingénieure en architecture du paysage, je me suis ensuite installée au Pays basque, où j’ai d’abord exercé en entreprise avant de créer, en 2016, mon bureau d’études d’ingénierie paysagère, spécialisé dans la conception et la maîtrise d’œuvre de projets d’aménagements paysagers, publics et privés. Depuis près de dix ans, je développe des projets où le végétal occupe une place centrale, avec une attention particulière portée à la lecture du site, aux usages et à la durabilité des aménagements. Depuis 2024, j’enseigne également en lycée agricole auprès d’élèves de baccalauréat professionnel et de BTSA Aménagement paysager la reconnaissance des végétaux, l’organisation de chantier et les principes de gestion différenciée, de la conception à l’entretien. Pour moi, le jardin est avant tout une œuvre sensible, un espace d’émotions et de dialogue entre l’homme et le vivant, rejoignant cette pensée de Louis René de Girardin : « Ce n’est ni en architecte, ni en jardinier, c’est en poète […] »”
