Die massiven Skulpturen von Ursula von Rydingsvard bringen die Spur der menschlichen Hand ans Licht und ähneln Holzschalen, Werkzeugen und Wänden, die scheinbar an das familiäre Erbe der Künstlerin im vorindustriellen Polen vor dem zweiten Weltkrieg erinnern. Die Künstlerin hat ihre Kindheit in Nazilagern und in den Flüchtlingslagern der Nachkriegszeit verbracht, und ihre ersten schmerzvollen Erinnerungen inspirieren sie bei ihrer Arbeit mit großer emotionaler Stärke.

Ursula Von Rydingsvard baut hohe Gebilde aus Zedernholz und gestaltet damit ein vielschichtiges Netz aus einzelnen Balken, geformt durch scharfe und lyrische Kanten und zusammengeklebt, um spektakuläre und sinnliche Flächen zu bilden, wie Puzzle...

Ursula Von Rydingsvard hat zahlreiche Preise erhalten, unter anderem einen Joan Mitchell-Preis (1997), einen Oskar der American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1994), Stipendien von der US-amerikanischen John-Simon-Guggenheim-Gedächtnis-Stiftung (1983) und vom National Endowment for the Arts (1979, 1986). Sie erhielt den Preis der Internationalen Vereinigung der Kunstkritiker (1992, 2000).

Sie hat in New York im Madison Square Park (2006) und im New Yorker Neuberger-Museum ausgestellt sowie an der Staatsuniversität von New York (2002) und im Storm King Art Center (1992). Ursula Von Rydingsvard lebt und arbeitet in New York.

BIOGRAFISCHE ANGABEN

Ursula VON RYDINGSVARD
DEUTSCHLAND

Ursula von Rydingsvard wurde 1942 in Deensen in Deutschland geboren. Sie hat an der Universität von Miami in Coral Gables 1965 einen BA und einen MA und an der Columbia University einen MFA (1975) absolviert und erhielt am Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore (1991), ihren Doktortitel.
Als berühmte Bildhauerin arbeitet die Künstlerin seit 30 Jahren im New Yorker Stadtbezirk Brooklyn. Nach ihrem Abschluss an der Columbia University im Jahre 1975 hat sie mit der Arbeit an einem bevorzugten Material begonnen: dem Zedernholz.
Ursula Von Rydingsvard ist in erster Linie für ihre großen, häufig gewaltigen Skulpturen bekannt, wobei sie für die Balken Zedernholz verwendet, das sie zersägt und, mit Graphitpulver bedeckt, zusammensetzt. Sie verwendet bewusst Bretter aus zerkleinertem Zedernholz in verschiedenen Längen.
„Diese abstrakten Formen als Signaturen beziehen sich auf Dinge in der realen Welt, indem sie das Zeichen der menschlichen Hand ans Licht bringen und gleichzeitig Formen und natürliche Stärken heraufbeschwören. Diese Formen umfassen typischerweise einfache Vasen und Schalen. Viele suggerieren Werkzeuge oder andere Artefakte wie Schaufeln, Löffel und Zäune, oder haben einen Bezug zu einfachen Behausungen, zu geologischen Formationen, zur Landschaft oder zum Körper“.
