DESIGNERS
Atelier Shadauk was founded in 2021 by Gala Pillaud-Vivien and Paul de Marliave to convey the techniques and visions they had in common. The Atelier is a permanent member of the Non-Etoile collective in Montreuil (93), and also boasts an experimentation and research studio in Feux in the Cher (18). The company focuses on the creative practices of living beings in relation to space, through art, design, architecture and landscape. Since it was founded, Shadauk has been experimenting across disciplines with an environmentally friendly, sustainable approach. They strive to work as closely to the chosen material as possible and bring to life the majority of their projects from the design to construction phase on a range of scales, from designing an object to temporary use urban development, set design and artistic installations. Shadauk also organises participatory workshops on the theme of construction, and encourages the involvement of local residents by communicating with them, providing opportunities to meet up, organising awareness campaigns and brainstorming sessions to discuss the possibilities for a given area.
Paul de Marliave is an architect and designer with French, Serbian and Canadian nationalities. He began his career in Mexico where he also studied agro-ecology and carpentry, before moving to Paris where he co-founded the Atelier Shadauk. He is currently working on a wide range of both solo and joint projects in architecture, art, set design and design.
Gala Pillaud-Vivien is an accredited architect. After studying at the École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Paris Val-de-Seine in Paris where she met Paul de Marliave, she specialised in social renovation while working for a Parisian architecture agency (Virtuel). Very quickly, in an effort to develop a more personal approach working closer to people, materials and the living, she co-founded the Atelier Shadauk with Paul. She carries her sketchbook everywhere with her and it embodies her approach, which is focused on a keen observation of her environment. For several years now, she has also been interested in landscape and has been bringing her ideas to life in her garden adjoining the Atelier Shadauk in the French department of Cher.
Manon Jacob is a textile designer and lives in Paris and Arles. She studied art at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Paris, before then enrolling on a textile design course at the ENSCI-Les Ateliers. Her interest in colour stems from painting and she has been developing her skills with plant-based dyes for several years now. She acquired this know-how and experimented with it during her studies, then went on to broaden her knowledge of tinctorial plants, agricultural by-products and so-called invasive plant species at the Atelier LUMA in Arles. Colour is central in her work and she combines it with her knowledge of fibres and shaping techniques such as weaving and stitching. She strives to promote local resources and so chooses to use mainly wool, looking at the different ways it can be used and the various transformation techniques. One of her recent projects involved developing textile colour guides that could be used as educational tools to demonstrate how broad the range of natural shades can be and the many ways they can be used. Recently, her cross-disciplinary approach and interest in the living led her to gardens, where she could broaden the interaction between textiles and plant life.
