23. monochrome blanc

“Monochrome Blanc” is a garden made up of various species of white flowers, a multitude of different shapes and scents. It is a monochrome garden, soothing, pure, refined and dreamlike... It is a succession of vegetable walls, white partitions all the same height, which expand and contract space, disconcerting visitors and spurring them on towards the vanishing point. And at the centre of this play of perspectives is a mirror, a reflection, a colour, a luminous point.
But when visitors turn back, to their surprise, there before them is a whole other world, revealing itself in a multitude of colours. A wonderful luxuriant garden, voluptuous and audacious in its design, lies before them. A baroque, theatrical setting that delights, fascinates and enchants.
Here, space is expanded. The garden’s maker has become a virtuoso, creating a dazzling series of set-pieces.
Each vegetable partition is a chromatic profusion of flowers and leaves – yellow, orange, red, mauve, blue and green. With each step they take, visitors come upon different shades, varied surfaces, smooth, brilliant or matt. The noblest of species mix with the most humble and all of them, together, intoxicate the senses.

Sante Simone is a garden architecture course coordinator, architect and Doctor of Urban and Architectonic Composition. In 2011, he founded KURMAK, an urban architectural and landscaping design office in Rome.

Lorenza Bartolazzi, a landscape architect who collaborated with Franco Zagari for seven years, is the founder of the MTO&ASS architectural and landscaping design office in Rome.

Cristiana Costanzo is a landscape architect with a PhD in environmental planning. She is Vice-President of the AIAPP (Italian Association of Landscape Architecture) – Lazio, Abruzzo, Molise and Sardinia branch, and is a teacher and researcher at La Sapienza University’s Faculty of Architecture in Rome. She is a winner of the “Ippolito Pizzetti” national prize (IFLA and EFLA) and was one of the Top 10 “New Italian Blood – Landscapers under 36” in 2014.

Aurelio Valentini, agricultural technician and garden designer, graduated in garden and landscape architecture from La Sapienza University in Rome. A liberal professional and gardening expert, he collaborates with various companies in the sector and nurserypeople. He founded Studio Extramoenia in 2012.

Fabio Manfredi is an architect and research professor in landscape architecture. He has been a researcher and teacher at Mediterranea University of Reggio Calabria and Delft University of Technology (The Netherlands).

The students

• Giulia Tasselli was born in Rome and graduated from La Sapienza University’s Engineering Faculty in Rome in 2008.
• Sandra Liebe was born in Bernburg, and graduated in company management and marketing from Leipzig University.
• Barbara di Carlantonio was born in Rome; she graduated from a scientific secondary school and has been employed at the United-States Embassy in Rome since 1998.
• Gianluca Pieran graduated in Economics and Business; he is a committed practitioner of gardening with a private clientele.
• Samuel Sardi is a graduate of the Istituto Tecnico Commerciale e per Geometri di Portoferraio.
• Cristina Istoc was born in Romania and grew up on the family farm; she is a graduate of the “Nagy Istvàn” art secondary school in Transylvania.
• Eufemia Iannace graduated in natural sciences, specialising in nature conservation, at La Sapienza University in Rome. Since 2008, she has been the associate administrator of her family’s fruit, vegetable and flower company “Jannace Cocietà agricola semplice”.
• Christian Villa Marcello graduated from the Giuseppe Garibaldi Agricultural Technical Institute in 2015. He currently works as a gardener for private clients.
