Nel Parco Storico, Patrick Dougherty ha disegnato forme aeree e vegetali. Monumentali, profondamente ispirate al luogo, interpellano i visitatori alla svolta dei boschetti grazie al loro aspetto mezzo naturale e mezzo architettonico.

Le loro pareti incurvate sono fatte di morbidi rami di salice intrecciate ed offrono ai passeggiatori uno spazio onirico sospeso tra due mondi nel cuore della natura. Senza mai imporsi, queste sculture si mischiano nel paesaggio facendo leva sull’immaginario. Risulta possibile credere che siano state costruite da schiere di uccelli, erette da roditori molto ambiziosi o portate dal vento. Grazie a questo gesto discreto di ampio respiro, Patrick Dougherty innesca un gioco con lo spettatore che viene indotto a sognare il mondo che lo circonda pensando alla natura in cui è immerso.

Patrick Dougherty ha trascorso la sua infanzia nella Carolina del Nord negli Stati Uniti. Il suo immaginario si è sviluppato in questi paesaggi naturali ricoperti da alberelli con rami flessibili e sculturali. Diventato adulto, con la sua laurea di belle arti in tasca, si lancia a partire dal 1982 nella realizzazione di opere a metà strada tra la scultura e l’architettura. Anche se molti assimilano la sua arte alla Land Art, Patrick Dougherty sfugge a qualsiasi catalogazione. È possibile scoprire le sue opere in tutto il mondo come nel Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park a Grand o all’aria aperta. Intrecciando sottili rami, crea forme monumentali alte alcuni metri che danno vita all’universo onirico delle sue esposizioni. Ogni suo progetto viene ideato tenendo conto dei legami con il luogo d’insediamento dell’opera aderendo, sviando o “aggredendo” il contesto nel quale essa si inserisce. Il processo di elaborazione delle opere inizia sempre con una ricerca conoscitiva approfondita dello spazio scelto per l’insediamento delle opere onde determinarne le “qualità fisiche e sociali” alle quali si ispireranno i primi schizzi. Il dialogo che scatta tra questi elementi si traduce con la realizzazione dell’opera costruita grazie alla collaborazione e alla mobilitazione di varie persone incaricate di tagliare, intrecciare e legare le ramature. Molto attaccato alla sua terra d’origine, Patrick Dougherty vive e lavora nella casa che ha costruito con le sue mani a Chapel Hill.
