La obra original, creada por Sheila Hicks, es una instalación especial, diseñada específicamente para la escalera de honor del Château de Chaumont-sur-Loire en el marco de un pedido financiado por la región Centre-Val de Loire.
«Los “satélites” colgados de las paredes de la escalera de honor del Château son como constelaciones de un jardín interestelar e interplanetario. El color blanco de la piedra toba, que exhibe el paso del tiempo, permite un diálogo fértil con los colores infinitos de las fibras.
Lo que siempre me ha inspirado es el rechazo a la repetición, el deseo de no repetir nunca lo que ya he creado. Tengo el deseo de estar en una invención continua y de crear en cada ocasión algo que aún no existe.
Una de las claves de esta sed permanente de renovación está en los universos contradictorios de mi infancia: como el del «general store» que mi abuelo materno poseía en la ciudad, donde siempre tenía que enfrentarme al incordio de tener que elegir entre ese sinfín de artículos, y el de la granja de mi abuela paterna, Ida, más sobrio, donde tenía constantemente que inventarlo todo de la nada. Estas influencias opuestas son una de las claves de mi obsesión perpetua con la creación.
Me encanta crear colores, que no están en la naturaleza. Estoy permanentemente inventando nuevos descubrimientos. Por ejemplo, estos satélites de colores instalados en las paredes nos impactan y nos sorprenden.
En mi opinión, todos los colores pueden ir juntos. Esto depende de la cantidad de capas diferentes de material, de la cantidad de luz y de la densidad de las sombras de los rayos de color, de los hilos de seda o de lino entrelazados y tendidos, que confieren a las obras su presencia.
Del color nace una energía, una fuerza espiritual y un sentimiento de paz.

Sheila Hicks utiliza con una virtuosidad increíble el hilo, las fibras y sus colores como un pintor que usa sus pigmentos.
Cada creación es para ella un viaje, una exploración que ella emprende a través de los maravillosos volúmenes de colores y los cordajes monumentales de una amplísima gama de fibras naturales y sintéticas, que la acompañan permanentemente y con las que inventa sus universos infinitamente poéticos.
Instalaciones monumentales o delicados «collages» y tejidos de lana o de lino participan de la misma ciencia del color de esta gran artista que, conoce profundamente todas las prácticas vinculadas al hilo que ha descubierto en los lugares más insólitos durante sus innumerables viajes de descubrimiento.

Sheila Hicks nació en 1934 en Hastings, Estados Unidos; vive y trabaja en París desde 1964. Procedente de la larga tradición del arte moderno que une la abstracción con otras muchas disciplinas, la artista norteamericana Sheila Hicks reinterpreta la tradición textil artesanal popular, mezclando las fronteras entre pintura y escultura con sus obras textiles. Después de haber sido alumna de Josef Albers en Yale, comenzó a trabajar la fibra con motivo de un viaje a América del Sur de 1958 a 1959, donde estudió las fábricas artesanales de Colombia, Chile, Perú y Bolivia. Después, la fibra se convirtió en el principal material de sus obras. Sheila Hicks percibe su trabajo, basándose en sus viajes y en las culturas que ha estudiado, como un proceso que tiene como resultado una auténtica interacción entre sus obras y el espectador, así como con la arquitectura en la que se presentan.
